Rideshare / Delivery Driver Insurance Checklist
Driving for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Instacart with only personal auto insurance can mean a denied claim and policy non-renewal. Here is the fix.
Coverage gaps to know about
- Period 1 (app on, no ride): platform offers minimal liability only — no collision
- Period 2/3 (matched/passenger in car): platform offers more, but with $1k–$2.5k deductibles
- Personal auto: usually excluded entirely while app is on
Solutions
- Add a rideshare endorsement to your personal policy ($10–25/month)
- Or buy a commercial auto policy (more expensive but full coverage)
- Confirm what your platform's coverage actually includes
- Get gap insurance if vehicle is financed
Documentation
- Keep platform earnings statements (proves business use for claims)
- Mileage log — separate personal vs business miles
- Receipts for vehicle expenses (deductible at tax time)
